Quantitative Concept Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
Computer modeling of activities such as concept-learning, conceptual blending, discovery, analogy and creativity has greatly expanded our understanding of possible mechanisms of conceptualization. Unfortunately, it has also meant that theoretical assessment of conceptual possibilities has become problematic. Determining what concepts can be constructed by what mechanisms in what contexts is far from straightforward. In this paper, a task analysis is developed which addresses the problem. This focuses on the combinatorial properties of conceptualization, dividing the space of concept-combination mechanisms into distinct prototypes and assessing the generative properties of each. Complexity formulae are presented which characterize the number of constructs which can be formed by a range of combinatorial strategies. The way in which such processes lead to the generation of distinct conceptual structures and spaces is mapped out. The analysis is then used to clarify the relationships between a range of concept-formation models and to address some issues of human conceptualization.

Concept analysis: some limitations and possible solutions.
Concepts are the basic building blocks of scientific knowledge or theoretical frameworks for any discipline. The strength of the theories that guide a discipline is dependent on the quality of the concept analysis. Thus, the utilisation of poorly understood concepts in research and theory development will result in questionable reliability and validity. Concept analysis is associated with the r...

Background and Aim: Combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (combat-related PTSD) is a chronic and debilitating severe mental condition in people with experience of war events, which has a deeply negative impact on their quality of life. This study aimed to design and assess the psychometric properties of quality of life questionnaire (QOL-Q) for Iran-Iraq war veterans with combat-related...
متن کاملRisk Aversion in the Small with Applications to Portfolio Analysis
The concept of risk aversion was introduced by Pratt in 1964 for expected utility framework, and has attracted much attention as an important quantitative characteristic of individual attitude to risk. The current paper extends the concept to other decision-making frameworks, and presents exact quantitative results for distorted probability functional. Applications of the concept to portfolio a...
متن کاملMulti-level Analysis Strategy to Make Sense of Concepts Maps
Making sense of concept maps is an ongoing challenge for the concept mapping community. This paper introduces a multilevel analysis strategy by combining quantitative and qualitative methods to triangulate changes in students’ concept maps. Quantitative analysis includes overall, selected, and weighted propositional analysis using a knowledge integration rubric (Linn, 2000) as well as network a...

While there are a wide variety of studies about communicative action theory of Habermas, there is the need for building of indicators and variables for quantitative methods of assessing this concept in a particular case study. Especially as the development of communicative action theory has created new perspectives in urban planning, it is necessary to assess and promote this concept in cities ...
